Comsat Architects is working on applying software defined networking (SDN) to space communications systems and networks.

What is SDN? Benefits?

Software Defined Networking (SDN) is the physical separation of the control plane from the data plane, via software, to allow the operator customization control over the network. SDN technology has the promise to centralize and simplify the control of enterprise network management.

Current Activities

OpenFlow Controller software, a type of SDN Controller, connects and configures network devices in order to determine the optimal path for application traffic. The intelligence in the physical component is transferred to a centralized control system, allowing this centralized controller to now decide how data should flow through the network based on current needs.
